“From Hong Kong to Hong Kong!
Returning to Hong Kong this week for the World Cancer Congress 2026 feels like coming full circle.
This city holds a deeply special place in my heart.
Back in 2010, as a small-town boy living abroad alone for the very first time, Hong Kong was my doorway to the world. I remember sharing a tiny 10m² room on The Chinese University of Hong Kong campus, mesmerized by the permanent energy, the cultural melting pot, and the realization of what it meant to be part of a truly global city.
It’s also here that some of my most special friendships started – and young puppy Mathieu looked quite different back then…scroll to see more.
Hong Kong has transformed drastically since those days, but being back here alongside the international cancer community makes the experience even more meaningful.
Day 1 of the congress set an inspiring tone, packed with impactful insights and strategic catch-ups:
China’s Data-Driven Quality Improvement:
The opening presentation showcased China’s impressive national cancer care quality improvement initiative.
It is a massive combination of process and system innovation, deeply anchored in data standardization – core themes I passionately advocate for and that our team at City Cancer Challenge (C/Can) continues to support through implementation across various countries.
Indonesia’s ASEAN Leadership:
It was fantastic to catch up with the vibrant Indonesian delegation.
I was thrilled to learn about Indonesia Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia taking on a leading role in ASEAN’s new breast cancer priority initiative, and see our work in Yogyakarta with Universitas Gadjah Mada, RSUP Dr. Sardjito and Jakarta with Rumah Sakit Kanker ‘Dharmais’ – Pusat Kanker Nasional being an integral part of it.
Digging deeper into China’s and India’s evolving subnational healthcare priorities and gaps provided valuable perspectives.
Equally rewarding was meeting with trusted partners like National Cancer Grid India, Roche or MSD, as we continue pushing our joint efforts to offer implementation support across the APAC region – and beyond.
