Mark Lewis, Director of Gastrointestinal Oncology at Intermountain Healthcare in Utah, shared Papa Hemeon’s post X, adding:
“The sad gap between academic and community oncology can be bridged by mutual understanding
- our field requires both breadth and depth
- most cancer care should be delivered close to home (but sub – specialized treatment at tertiary and quaternary centers still has a time and place)
- he majority of us strive to deliver the standard of care while the researchers (not mutually exclusive with clinicians) push us forward
- just as pressure is a privilege, we all signed up for lifelong learning as the price of progress is the need to keep up with an ever – changing landscape (put another way: if I practiced the way I was trained ~15 years ago it would be malpractice by now)
- patients want and need us to collaborate
- we are truly better together.”
Quoting Papa Heme’s post:
“I practiced academic oncology for 10 years and now I am at a large community practice.
In retrospect I realize how foolish I must have sounded when giving talks to the community. It’s a different world in the real world.”
