Marielle Santos McLeod: AACR Scientist–Survivor Program and Patient Advocacy in Cancer Research

Marielle Santos McLeod, Director of Strategic Programs and Partnerships at Cancer Hope Network and Patient Research Advocate at the SWOG Cancer Research Network, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“I’ve taken some time to reflect on what was truly an incredible honor—participating as a patient advocate in the Scientist–Survivor Program at the American Association for Cancer Research Annual Meeting.

This experience not only deepened my perspective and knowledge on clinical research advocacy, but also reinforced how critical a strong understanding of cancer research is to advancing our work and impact. Many of the conversations centered on the growing role of AI in clinical research, offering both a glimpse into the future of scientific innovation and a clear reminder of the importance of thoughtful implementation. When done well, these advancements have the potential to strengthen collaboration across institutions globally and meaningfully improve patient care and access.

I was also proud to present our research poster highlighting the positive impact of one-on-one peer support for adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer patients and survivors. Our work underscores the unique challenges faced by this population and demonstrates how addressing psychosocial needs plays a vital role in both outcomes and overall quality of life.

I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to learn from Dr. Anna Barker and the many experts who generously shared their knowledge throughout the program. Equally meaningful was the chance to reconnect with fellow advocates from the FDA-GRASP training in March Nicole Normandin Rueda, LMSW, Victoria Lee, Melinda Bachini and continue building those personal and professional relationships.

Lastly, I want to thank my dear friend Allison Rosen, MS for her mentorship and encouragement throughout this program. It is truly inspiring to advocate alongside you and continue learning from your leadership.”
