Maria Hafez: ASCO Is So Much More Than the Science On the Screen

Maria Hafez, Assistant Professor at St. Luke’s University Health Network, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Until next year, ASCO.

Every Annual Meeting reminds me that ASCO is so much more than the science on the screen. It’s where we connect, reuniting with old friends, making new ones, finding new mentors and reconnecting with the ones who shaped us. That, to me, is the real ASCO Connect.

This is a meeting that builds the next generation of leaders and moves research and trials forward, not only in the U.S., but globally. The world feels smaller every year. Between social media and cross-border collaboration, it truly has become one globe, and that gives me so much hope.

And even as we celebrate progress, I carry with me the patients and communities living through conflict, because cancer doesn’t pause for war. This year I had the honor of presenting our poster on delivering oncology care in conflict-affected and resource-limited settings: a reminder of the patients too often forgotten during wartime.

I’m also deeply proud to serve on the ASCO IMG International Medical Graduates Community of Practice and to take part in mentoring and professional development for the next generation of IMG oncologists.

I was also honored to take part as an on-site mentor at the ASCO Women’s Lounge connecting with early-career colleagues and offering guidance, encouragement, and professional development to women advancing in oncology.

Thank you to many friends and colleagues who made this ASCO unforgettable.

Until next ASCO.”
