“Happy to share our latest publication in Pediatric Blood and Cancer: ‘Hospital Readmission After Pediatric Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation: A Systematic Review With Meta-Analysis of 30-Day Readmission.’
After discharge from transplant, children and their families carry a heavy load of monitoring, medications, and follow-up. Yet we still lack a clear picture of how often these children come back to the hospital, and why.
Main findings:
- Approximately 1 in 3 children was readmitted within 30 days of discharge after HSCT (pooled proportion 31.7%; 95% CI 22.6–42.4%)
- Fever and infection were the most frequent reasons for readmission
- Readmission definitions varied widely across studies, and only one study reported adjusted analyses
- We propose a standardized core definition to make future studies, quality improvement work, and multicenter comparisons possible
This paper means a lot to me. It is the work of my mentees in the Experts Program of the Meta-Analysis Academy and my first paper as senior author.
Thank you to the Meta-Analysis Academy for allowing me to connect with and mentor early-career physicians and scientists around the world. Watching talented people turn a question into a published review, learning every step along the way, is one of the most rewarding parts of my career.
Mentorship has no borders, and neither does good science.
