Mara Antonoff: Women are Wanted and Needed in Cardiothoracic Surgery

Mara Antonoff, Associate Professor of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at MD Anderson Cancer Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“I am very proud to see Women in Thoracic Surgery featured in the New York Times today. The challenges highlighted in the article are real, and they reflect the experiences that so many women in our field have faced for decades.

At the same time, I want to share the energy that truly defined our meeting. The room was filled with positivity, momentum, and a strong collective commitment to shaping a better future for our mentees, our patients, and our daughters. The scientific sessions were outstanding, the discussions were practical and inspiring, and the sense of community was powerful.

As I said during the meeting, it is time to move beyond listing all the reasons that cardiothoracic surgery is hard for women and begin telling the world why it is an extraordinary field, why it is a privilege and an honor, and why women are wanted and needed in this specialty.

I am grateful for this recognition of WTS, and even more grateful for the remarkable women and allies who are doing the work to move our field forward.”
