Mahdi Sheikh: Honored to Learn from Richard Peto and Share the Stage With a Legend

Mahdi Sheikh, Scientist at International Agency for Research on Cancer/World Health Organization, shared a post on LinkedIn:

IARC60 conference concluded yesterday, with wonderful exchanges on cutting-edge science and cancer control policies.

But for me the best part was spending four hours with the legendary Prof. Sir. Richard Peto in a quiet corner of the conference.

We discussed tobacco epidemiology, mortality trends, cancer causation, old studies, and new questions. Hearing his perspectives firsthand was truly special.

What struck me most was his continued curiosity, passion and humility after seven decades of work that have transformed public health and saved millions of lives.

Just a few of his influential contributions:

  • Establishing the health risks of tobacco
  • Establishing the benefits of quitting, smoking
  • Introducing the log-rank test
  •  Pioneering meta-analyses of RCTs
  • Quantifying avoidable cancer risks
  • Describing Peto’s paradox in cancer biology

An unforgettable honor to learn from him and share the stage with such a legend.”
