Pope Leo XIV Announces Upcoming Surgery to Remove a Lung Nodule – Lung Cancer Europe

Lung Cancer Europe shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Pope Leo XIV has just announced that doctors have found a ‘localised nodule’ in his lung and that he will undergo surgery to remove it in the coming days.

He described it as being at a ‘very early stage’ and ‘well localised’.

By speaking about it so openly, he’s also put a phrase many people see in scan reports into the public conversation.

A lung nodule is a small area seen on a scan. Most lung nodules are not cancer, but some can be, which is why they need proper assessment.

Words such as ‘localised’ or ‘well defined’ describe how something looks or where it is. They don’t, on their own, tell us whether a nodule is cancer.

Doctors look at the whole picture: the nodule’s size, shape and type, whether it has changed over time, previous scans and the person’s individual risk factors.

Sometimes the next step is another scan. Sometimes further tests or surgery are recommended.

The important point is that a scan description is not a diagnosis.

There has been no diagnosis announced in Pope Leo’s case, so it would be wrong to speculate beyond what he has said publicly.

It is good to see lung health being talked about openly. Lung conditions can still come with fear, assumptions and stigma, and straightforward conversations can help make it easier for people to ask questions and seek care.

We wish him well for the surgery and recovery ahead.”
