Loizos G. Loizou: Cyprus Has a Potential to be a Reference for the International Medicine

Loizos G. Loizou, Head of Cyprus International Action Plan for Children with Cancer at ELPIDA Foundation for Children with Cancer, shared a post on LinkedIn:

My dear friends,

We continue to turn commitment into action, for the good of children with cancer and other serious, devastating diseases.

We highlight Cyprus as a point of reference for international humanitarian and medical contribution.

Our recent working visit and meeting, on 27/1/2026, with Dr. Hans Kluge, Regional Director for Europe of the World Health Organization (WHO), as well as with Dr. Shaikh Irshad, WHO Special Representative in Cyprus, resulted in an agreement of exceptional importance between WHO and the ELPIDA Foundation.

We agreed to work closely on the following main axes:

  • Medical transfers of critically ill children from conflict areas (Ukraine, Gaza).
  • Improve access to life-saving anti-cancer drugs for children.
  • Training of health professionals, with Cyprus acting as a regional hub.
  • Develop information and education programmes, with short but concise and engaging videos, in countries where basic public health programmes are lacking – for prevention, early diagnosis, proper use of medicines and compliance with medical guidelines.
  • Provision of life-saving vaccines, such as against cervical cancer and hepatitis B, to countries with great needs, such as Botswana and other African countries.
  • Joint international representation and promotion of our work.

We are moving steadily, with sure steps, endurance and hope for the good of children, wherever they live.

Cyprus has the potential to function as a reliable reference point for international humanitarian and medical services.

Not with words, but with consistency, cooperation and deeds, so that no child is deprived of healing, care or hope due to war, poverty or inequalities.”
