“The last phase of testing of a personalised cancer vaccine for melanoma has been completed, and it worked.
It is a genuine honor to see our UK clinical trials system deliver again for NHS patients.
🇬🇧 UK sites over-recruited. Patients here were among the first in the world to access these cancer vaccine trials. Our NHS teams helped demonstrate what is possible when research, industry and clinical care come together around patients.
I had the lovely opportunity to speak to BBC News about this advance. It has been an honor to champion and help accelerate the UK’s cancer vaccine programme, and particularly special to be able to cheer on the patients, clinical teams and researchers who made this possible. I said, we should aim to let NHS patients benefit from cancer vaccine technology.
And perhaps the most exciting question is: what comes next?
The next generation of personalised cancer vaccines will be designed using AI and sovereign supercomputers, learning from NHS genomic and clinical data to identify the right cancer targets for individual patients. Work made possible because of Emma Hindley, MBE, Priya Sharma, Jacquelyn Goddard and the whole AIRR team, part of the AI for science strategy by Monica Dahiya.
The UK has extraordinary ingredients: the NHS, genomics, world-leading clinical trials, AI, supercomputing and life sciences.
Now we have the opportunity to bring them together and accelerate the next generation of cancer vaccine discoveries for NHS patients. The UK Cancer Vaccine AI Scientist and Supercomputing Project, made possible because of Advanced Research + Invention Agency (ARIA), Paul Brown, Brian Wang, and Medical Research Council, Royal College of Physicians and Cancer Research UK (CRUK). And well done to everyone involved in building this incredible engine across the UK.
