Kirsty Danielson: It is With Great Sadness That We Note the Passing of Our Friend Peter Larsen

Kirsty Danielson, Head of Surgery and Critical Care Department, Associate Professor and Associate Dean Research at University of Otago, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“It is with great sadness that we note the passing of our friend and colleague Associate Professor Peter Larsen on Friday 22nd May after a long illness.

Peter had a long and distinguished career with the University of Otago, Wellington. He completed his PhD in the Department of Surgery and Anaesthesia, and after Postdoctoral training in the USA, returned as a Lecturer in 2010. He was the Head of Department of Surgery and Anaesthesia 2015 – 2025, and Head of Department of Radiation Therapy 2017 – 2023. He had also previously served as Associate Dean Student Affairs.

Peter was a highly intelligent person with a strong sense of integrity, who always believed that developing the people he led and taught was the most valuable and rewarding part of his job. He impacted many students and colleagues, and taught across the medical programme, radiation therapy, medical technology, and science. He led the Wellington Cardiovascular Research Group within the department and also made substantial contributions to research undertaken by medical colleagues and registrars based at Wellington Hospital.

He will be greatly missed by his friends and colleagues and our deepest sympathies go out to his family.

Peter’s family have asked for donations to be made to Mary Potter Hospice in lieu of flowers.”
