Kefah Mokbel: Is ‘Breast Cancer Awareness Month’ Still the Right Term in 2025?

Kefah Mokbel, Professor of Medicine (Honorary) at Cardiff University School of Medicine, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Is ‘Breast Cancer Awareness Month’ still the right term in 2025?

For over three decades, Breast Cancer Awareness Month has played a transformative role in increasing public understanding of breast cancer, encouraging early detection, and reducing stigma. These campaigns have undoubtedly saved countless lives.

However, in 2025 — particularly in advanced societies — awareness is no longer the primary challenge. Today, virtually everyone is aware of breast cancer. The real imperatives are action, access, and advancement.

It may therefore be time to evolve the terminology to reflect modern priorities:

  • Breast Cancer Action Month – focusing on prevention, early diagnosis, risk-adapted treatment and advocacy
  • Advancing Breast Cancer Care Month – highlighting innovation, research, and precision medicine
  • Breast Health Empowerment Month – broadening the focus to prevention, wellness, and equity

At the London Breast Institute, we believe the narrative should shift from awareness to impact. Starting next year, we will be adopting the term ‘Breast Cancer Action Month’ to align with our mission of translating knowledge and research into measurable improvement in outcomes and quality of life for patients.

The next chapter of October should not merely ask people to be aware, but to act, support progress, and empower change.”
