Karl-Johan Malmberg: Reviewing 292 Applications for PhD Position at the Karolinska Institute

Karl-Johan Malmberg, Director, Center of Excellence: Precision Immunotherapy Alliance at The University of Oslo, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“I am currently reviewing 292 applications to an open PhD position at the Karolinska Institute. The quality is insane.

After careful review I could hire at least 25 candidates on the go, likely many more. All 152 eligible candidates have better CVs than I had when I knocked on Rolf Kiessling‘s door three years into Medical school. I actually don´t recall preparing a CV.

After a few minutes of hesitation (I had almost not held a pipett), I was accepted and could start my training during weekends and summer holidays. I am not posting this to show off how popular I am, my colleagues receive over 300 applications for similar roles so this is the rule, not the exception.

Many applicants have two Msc degrees, internships from great labs and long lists of advanced technologies they have been trained in. There is so much energy and talent out there and so little to offer.

From the bottom of my heart, I wish to thank all applicants for your interest in our work and apologize beforehand for not being able to invite more than max 10 to interview for this position.”
