Karen Canfell, Lead, CEC and Professor of Public Health at The Cancer Elimination Collaboration (CEC), Sydney School of Public Health, University of Sydney, shared on LinkedIn:
“Small island nations share some particular opportunities and challenges in relation to cancer control and cervical cancer elimination.
As part of EPICC (the Elimination Partnership in Cervical Cancer) we support country-led efforts in several Pacific Island Nations.
Our team at The Cancer Elimination Collaboration (CEC), Sydney School of Public Health, University of Sydney, is also very proud to be one of the partners supporting implementation efforts in the northern, US-affiliated Pacific Islands (USAPI). The Pacific against Cervical Cancer Project (PACe) program, established in 2019, is led by the wonderful Neal Palafox. (read more about PACe here.
A new article, available at the link below, was led by Diep Nguyen in our team, and summarises the cervical cancer burden and elimination status in the US freely associated states – Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI), and the Republic of Palau, and US territories – Guam, American Samoa, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI).
We conclude that ‘initiatives like the PACe project are actively addressing gaps and building capacity to advance toward the goal of cervical cancer elimination in the USAPI.’
Thanks to all of our other amazing PACe Collaborators and co-authors at the University of Hawii, CDC, PIHOA, and jurisdictional leaders!”
