“‘In February, I was diagnosed with stage III rectal cancer – definitely not on the year’s to-do list.
My cancer was dMMR/MSI-H, which opened the door to immunotherapy with nivolumab and ipilimumab. After treatment, scans, scopes, and more people seeing my backside than is socially acceptable, by June I was cancer-free – 100% clinical response, with no trace of the tumour.
One thing I’ve kept doing throughout all of this is exercise every day. Walking the dogs, getting my steps in and rebuilding my fitness. It gives me something positive I can control and has been massively important for me, physically and mentally.
I’m still having treatment and regular watch-and-wait surveillance. Immunotherapy also gave me adrenal insufficiency, so my adrenal glands have taken early retirement, and genetic testing added Lynch syndrome (MSH2) to the story too.
So I keep turning up and keep moving.’ – John H.
