Who gets told what is impossible?
In this piece, I reflect on how the experiences of women in cancer research have changed over these 25 years – the progress in visibility, representation and recognition, but also the persistent structural barriers that continue to impede equity.
This issue also brings together reflections from leaders in our field on the advances in cancer research and treatment as well as unmet expectations of the past 25 years, alongside perspectives from emerging researchers on the next 25.
A Comment by Swanton and collaeagues on the long return on discovery science is a timely reminder of how today’s treatments build on discoveries made decades earlier.
Together, these contributions invite us to consider both how cancer research advances and who has the opportunity to shape its future.
