“What an extraordinary achievement and an inspiring example of what is possible when innovation, collaboration, and compassion come together.
In just over one year, the TeleOncology Hub has transformed cancer care across Northeastern Nigeria, bringing specialist expertise to communities where access was once nearly impossible. More than 300 patients have connected with cancer specialists, over 30 multidisciplinary tumor boards have been convened, more than 500 patient navigation encounters have taken place, and thousands of kilometers of travel-and significant financial hardship-have been avoided. These are not just numbers; they represent lives changed and hope restored.
What makes this initiative truly remarkable is that it demonstrates world-class oncology does not have to be confined to major academic centers. By integrating telemedicine, multidisciplinary care, patient navigation, health literacy, and strong community partnerships, the team has created a scalable model for delivering quality cancer care in underserved and humanitarian settings.
This is exactly what American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) stands for. During his Presidential Address at the 2026 ASCO Annual Meeting, Dr. Eric Small reminded us that quality cancer care is a right, not a privilege. The TeleOncology Hub is a powerful example of that vision becoming reality by bringing evidence-based, guideline-concordant care to patients regardless of where they live.
