JJ Singleton: Mental Health Challenges of Long-Term Cancer Treatment

JJ Singleton,  Research Advocate at Fight Colorectal Cancer, adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer survivor, shared on LinkedIn:

“Treatment round 188 I sit here in this chair, physically I know what’s coming, the world and life seem to be on a broken rollercoaster of ups and downs that strain the mental health but through it all I show up for the 188th time an find my way back every 21 days

Showing up is all I feel that I can control

My treatment is working, my cancer is stable but still incurable
The side effects will come they will bring hell with them, I’ll complain and think why me
People will look at me and think whatever they want, he was too young for cancer, he got cancer because of his partying or diet, he should try this or that, he is an idiot who trusts pharmaceutical companies an Drs ect

  • I will lose more friends from this disease
  • I will know an meet more people that hear the words you have cancer
  • I will see the government go back an forth with each election on decisions that impact lives
  • I see incredible breakthroughs happening and on the verge
  • I see them also not happening in time for people

All I can do is show up and be me and use my voice and my experience to hopefully help I will continue to show up and treat it all as the true honor an privilege it is ill never take that responsibility for granted

Chemo shirt the absolute legend Chris Farley/ Tommy Boy.”
