Jia (Jenny) Liu: Speaking on Genomics and Future-Proofing Cancer Care at PCPA Summit 2025

Jia (Jenny) Liu, Translational Lead of Early Phase Drug Development at The Kinghorn Cancer Centre, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Yesterday I had the privilege of speaking at the Private Cancer Physicians of Australia Limited Cancer Summit 2025 in Sydney, where oncologists, researchers, policymakers, and patient advocates came together with one goal: future-proofing cancer care.

The program was wide-ranging — from AI in targeted cancer treatments and liquid biopsy, to novel radiotherapy combinations and radiopharmaceuticals, CAR-T therapies, and the role of patient advocacy and the bridging funding coalition to address the access gap between evidence and access.

It reflected both the diversity of innovation in oncology and the complexity of ensuring equity of access, the latter which 🇦🇺 could improve on.

In my talk on “Genomics – Actionable and Emerging Mutations”, I shared how we can accelerate access to biomarker-matched therapies through early-phase clinical trials, bridging discovery science with real-world delivery. This means embedding genomics into trial design from the outset, expanding access through collaborative trial networks like NSW Early Clinical Trials Alliance (NECTA) and looking beyond genomics alone to integrate proteomics and other multi-omic approaches for sharper patient selection.

The panel discussions reinforced that no single innovation will future-proof cancer care. Progress will depend on integrating therapeutic modalities while also ensuring system-level readiness and communicating these therapies, frequently unfunded; with our patients in a clear and compassionate way. The communications masterclass led by Fran Boyle was a highlight!

For those working in oncology, drug development, or health policy: What are the biggest barriers to bringing novel therapies into community oncology? And what can we do to advance Australia’s ability to fund innovative therapies?”
