“Hi, I’m Jay Bhattacharya, director of the National Institutes of Health. I’m pleased to recognize NIH-funded international research collaboration that has generated laboratory models of 25 tumor types from thousands of patient donors.
This achievement is a major win for cancer research, given that previous collections only captured a limited fraction of cancer’s biological diversity. Long-term efforts from the Human Cancer Models Initiative produced internationally accessible models for all major cancer subtypes. Remarkably, these lab-grown models retain the genetic and molecular traits of the original tumors with striking accuracy, even after extended growth in laboratory conditions. The HCMI searchable catalog allows cancer researchers to find patient-derived models using criteria such as cancer type, treatment history, and demographics.
Wider distribution to cancer researchers expands opportunities to develop new cancer therapies and inform future research directions. At the heart of this progress are lab-grown models, including organoids, that mimic the cellular makeup of natural organs, enabling research on tumor evolution, drug sensitivity, and genetics.”‘
