Isabel Mestres on Building Trust and Accountability in Global Health Leadership

Isabel Mestres, CEO of City Cancer Challenge (C/Can), shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Tuesday Reflections | Collaboration, Trust… and the Courage to Decide.

At City Cancer Challenge (C/Can), we bring together brilliant people from more than 25 nationalities, across time zones, backgrounds, and personality types. It’s what makes our work so rich… and occasionally, so complex to manage.

I love when team members want to be more involved in strategy and decision-making. But with a voice comes responsibility, you can’t want a say without being ready to own the outcome. And sometimes, when decisions get tough, people suddenly opt out not out of fear, but from uncertainty about how to share accountability.

As a leader, my role isn’t to make everyone agree, but to build trust strong enough that people feel safe to act, take responsibility, and sometimes disagree. And as C/Can grows, I know I must be even sharper and bolder in my own decisions, to bring clarity where it’s needed, and space where it’s deserved.
Because collaboration isn’t about endless consensus. It’s about the confidence to decide, together.

Trust gives decisions roots, accountability gives them wings. How do you build teams where accountability feels empowering, not intimidating.”
