Institute of Oncology Ljubljana Opens Slovenia’s First Department of Clinical Nutrition and Gastrointestinal Failure

“The Institute of Oncology Ljubljana is the first in Slovenia to open the Department of Clinical Nutrition and Gastrointestinal Failure

Today, the Department of Clinical Nutrition and Gastrointestinal Failure was officially opened at the Institute of Oncology Ljubljana, which represents an important milestone for Slovenian healthcare and patients with this type of complex medical condition.

Gastrointestinal failure is a rare but extremely complex medical condition that, without proper treatment and treatment, leads to a severe deterioration in the quality of life and can lead to death.

More complex cases pose a great challenge for treatment, as they require a holistic approach and multidisciplinary treatment in a department that specializes in managing such complex conditions.

There has never been a department in Slovenia that would routinely deal with such demanding conditions in patients. The Department of Clinical Nutrition and Gastrointestinal Failure was Institute of Oncology Ljubljana created out of recognizing the needs for the treatment of severe gastrointestinal disorders and failure, many years of professional work and international networking, and above all, the awareness that patients with such a complex disease condition need comprehensive treatment that is comparable to international guidelines and practices.

The importance of the opening of the department was summed up by the director of the Institute of Oncology Ljubljana, Zlata Štiblar Kisič, with the following words: “With the Department of Clinical Nutrition and Gastrointestinal Failure, we are setting an important professional and systemic milestone, and above all, this means a concrete improvement in the treatment of patients with one of the most demanding disease conditions.”

Head of the Department of Clinical Nutrition and Gastrointestinal Failure, Viz. Prof. dr. Nada Rotovnik Kozjek said:

“In recent years, more than 500 patients with gastrointestinal failure, including those with extremely complex forms of this condition, have been included in the treatment system at the Institute of Oncology Ljubljana; Many have also been able to recover from transient gastrointestinal failure through timely and professional treatment.”

Institute of Oncology Ljubljana thus strengthens its role as a reference centre and proves that Slovenia can also provide treatment comparable to the most developed European healthcare systems in the field of gastrointestinal failure.

The inauguration ceremony of the Department of Clinical Nutrition and Gastrointestinal Failure was also accompanied by the Minister of Health, Valentina Prevolnik Rupel.
