“A week of learning, collaboration, and seeing oncology from every angle!
Recently, I completed the ESO – ESSO – ESTRO – ESP Multidisciplinary Course on Oncology for Medical Students, held in Johannes Kepler Universität Linz in Linz, Austria.
It was an incredibly valuable experience that gave me a broader understanding of how complex cancer care truly is and, more importantly, how essential collaboration between different specialties is to providing the best possible care for patients.
Throughout the week, we explored the multidisciplinary management of breast, gynecological, genitourinary, lung, and gastrointestinal cancers, with sessions covering:
- Oncological principles in diagnosis and treatment
- The role of pathology in guiding cancer management
- Surgical approaches and decision – making
- Chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and their integration with surgery
- Multidisciplinary team (MDT) case discussions
- Clinical visits and an insight into oncology practice
- Collaborative group work and case presentations
One of my biggest takeaways was that oncology is much more than understanding individual treatment modalities. It is about bringing different perspectives together, understanding the patient as a whole, and making thoughtful, evidence – based decisions as a team.
Beyond the academic knowledge, I’m especially grateful for the opportunity to meet and learn alongside such motivated medical students from different backgrounds and countries. The discussions, teamwork, and friendships made the experience even more meaningful.
A sincere thank you to all the lecturers and faculty members for sharing their expertise, experience, and passion for oncology, (Assia Konsoulova, Nicola Dinapoli, Stefan Stättner, Mateusz Spałek and others) and to European School of Oncology, European Society of Surgical Oncology (ESSO), European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTRO), and European Society of Pathology for organizing such an inspiring and comprehensive course.
I’m leaving Linz with new knowledge, new perspectives, and even greater motivation to continue learning about oncology and multidisciplinary cancer care.”
