“Not every important cancer update brings good news.
BioNTech and Genentech are ending a phase 2 trial of a personalized therapeutic mRNA cancer vaccine in patients with colorectal cancer who had detectable tumor DNA in their blood after surgery.
An interim analysis suggested the trial was unlikely to show a benefit, and a later review found a numerical imbalance in overall survival between the groups. The direction and magnitude of that imbalance were not reported, and no new safety signal was identified.
For context, the treatment was given alone, without a checkpoint inhibitor, in a tumor type that usually responds poorly to immunotherapy. A separate pancreatic cancer trial continues. We now need to see the full results.
