“Major milestone for head and neck cancer treatment.
We’re delighted to share that a landmark proton beam therapy trial for oropharyngeal cancer – led by Professor David Thomson, Consultant Clinical Oncologist at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust – has been published in The Lancet.
This phase III study offers rare, high quality randomized evidence comparing modern radiotherapy approaches. It captures patient-reported outcome measures, functional outcomes, disease control and survival. These insights will play an important role in shaping future health policy, guiding resource allocation, and helping ensure fair access to advanced cancer technologies.
Delivered in collaboration with The Institute of Cancer Research and The University of Manchester, and supported by the Manchester Cancer Research Centre ecosystem, the trial involved 20 centres across the UK.
It was funded by Cancer Research UK, with additional support from The Taylor Family Foundation.
One participant, Tex Leece – a father of two from Bolton – remains cancer free more than three years after treatment. Just six weeks after completing therapy, he was able to walk his daughter down the aisle at her wedding.
Tex said:
I’m really well, and still super active thanks to the treatment I received. I’m not surprised by the results of the trial as I’d done so well with the standard radiotherapy I was given.
A huge thank you to every patient and multidisciplinary team member whose commitment made this vital research possible.”
