Hayley Jones: Connecting Cancer Prevention, Law and Health Equity at Cancer Council Australia

Hayley Jones, Director of WHO Collaborating Centre on Law and Noncommunicable Disease, shared on LinkedIn:

“Yesterday in Sydney reminded me just how fortunate I am to work in this field.

I had the pleasure of presenting to my wonderful colleagues at Cancer Council Australia about our work at the McCabe Centre for Law & Cancer and the many ways we collaborate to advance cancer prevention, equity and better outcomes for people affected by cancer, across Australia and beyond.

From law reform work on insurance and employment, to costs of cancer and global tobacco control, there are so many points of intersection.

It was a great opportunity over lunch to exchange ideas and strengthen connections, and I was thrilled to see Marie Malica of the Clinical Oncology Society of Australia (COSA) and Mary Assunta of Southeast Asia Tobacco Control Alliance (SEATCA).

A highlight was meeting Truffles, an essential staff member Cancer Council Australia!

There should be more office dogs – it certainly supports mental health!

The day finished with an inspiring public lecture from Dr Ophira Ginsburg at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research.

Thank you to Professor Louise Chappell AM and Na’ama Carlin for bringing this important conversation to Sydney.

Their incredible book, ‘Being Patient: Close Encounters in Cancer World’, should be required reading for all in the health sector.

Through sharing their own lived experiences, they continue to encourage more honest conversations about cancer, care and what it means to navigate the health system.

Thank you to Jacinta Reddan for the invitation to Cancer Council Australia’s offices, and your support.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to meet with so many passionate colleagues across the cancer sector.

And I am looking forward to more discussions in Sydney and Melbourne over the next two weeks on how we can make progress in cancer control not only on innovation, but on ensuring that discovery reaches every person and every community, galvanised by Ophira‘s visit!”
