Hayley Jones, Director at McCabe Centre for Law and Cancer, Co-Chair at Australian WHO Collaborating Centre Network, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Inspiring to be amongst 6000 women leaders, gender diverse people and supportive men at the opening of Women Deliver today, the world’s largest convening on gender equality!
It was fantastic to kick off the week with a frank discussion between Assistant Health Minister Rebecca White and Keziah Bennett-Brook on opportunities for reforms for gender equity and Indigenous health, organised by The George Institute for Global Health.
An added bonus was catching up with powerhouse colleagues Jacinta Reddan, Jane Martin and Sarah L. White, and reconnecting with the fabulous team from TGI!
The opening plenary was packed with galvanising speeches from the Governor-General, the Prime Minister of Tuvalu, the UN Assistant Secretary General, former PM Julia Gillard, Premier Jacinta Allen and many more, and was enhanced by impromptu sung welcomes.
Some lines that stuck with me:
- ‘There has never been a more critical moment to ensure women can deliver.’
- ‘Gender equality is not a luxury and is not just an issue for women.’
- ‘We need peace away from the greed of men.’
- ‘When gender equality is improved, men and women rise together.’
- ‘Fight for it. Legislate it. Make it real for women and girls.’
- ‘Change calls us here and we will answer.’
Indeed we will.”
