“Is robotic colonoscopy the next step in endoscopy?
The Triton 1 robotic endoscopy system recently received FDA 510(k) clearance, marking an important milestone for robotic endoscopy.
In the 50-patient first-in-human CARE study:
- 100% cecal intubation
- No adverse events at 14-day follow-up
- 54.2% adenoma detection rate
- No abdominal pressure or patient repositioning required
- Successful completion of 77/77 attempted polypectomies
Robotics has transformed many areas of surgery. It will be interesting to see whether advances in control, stability, and ergonomics can similarly improve colonoscopy.
These are early, single-center, non-randomized findings.
Larger comparative studies will be important to determine whether robotic endoscopy translates into meaningful improvements in quality, efficiency, patient experience, and outcomes.
Interested to hear perspectives from colleagues in colorectal surgery and advanced endoscopy on where robotic endoscopy may fit into the future of colonoscopy.”
