Giovanni Maria Iannantuono, Medical Oncologist at Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli IRCCS, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Today I want to thank a group of people with whom I shared two intense and truly meaningful years.
They allowed me to take my first steps in Phase 1, to grow, make mistakes, and learn.
I have learned that working in Phase 1 means walking alongside our patients every day and embracing uncertainty. Uncertainty driven by still limited evidence, in a setting that demands rigor, focus, and awareness. This is never about shifting responsibility, but about carefully assessing whether an experimental treatment can truly represent a meaningful opportunity for a specific patient. In Phase 1, every finding matters: our work is to look for a signal, even when it does not seem to be there.
Conducting high-quality Phase 1 trials starts with one thing: teamwork. And for that, I am grateful to:
- A truly exceptional group of Study Coordinators – Valeria Altamura, Giuliano Maiolatesi, Martina Mazzuferi, Alberto Gatto, Eliana Melchiorre, Marta Costantini – constant and indispensable presence for both patients and investigators. Tireless, organized, and always available. Without their daily work, none of this would be possible.
- An outstanding group of physicians – Marco Filetti, Andrea Spinazzola, Francesca Lo Bianco, Stefano Sganga – different backgrounds, different perspectives, one shared mindset: collaboration, mutual support, and shared decision-making, always with the patient at the center.
A special thank you goes to our Director, Gennaro Daniele – A leader capable of bringing together skills, vision, and people, guiding the team with balance and harmony. Someone who recognizes and builds on the strengths of each team member, fostering growth and creating the conditions for excellence.
For me, he has been and continues to be a true mentor, who has helped me grow tremendously and who will continue to guide me in the future.
The Phase I Unit at Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli IRCCS is a flagship program, the result of a clear vision, consistency, and the ability to build and inspire a team – something that would not have been possible without him.
I will carry all of this with me.
Grateful for the journey. Grateful for the people.”
