Gilberto Lopes, Chief of the Division of Medical Oncology at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, shared on LinkedIn:
“Leadership begins with listening.
Through my years serving UICC and working with partners across different regions, I have learned that effective global cancer control requires more than good ideas.
It requires strong institutions, committed people, and the capacity to turn evidence into policy – and policy into action.
Countries and organisations face very different challenges. Solutions must reflect local realities, and lasting progress must be built through partnership.
Our collective experience – from advancing lung cancer policy through IASLC to expanding access to cancer medicines through the UICC – led ATOM Coalition – reinforces an important lesson: global organisations are strongest when they empower their members.
I have had the privilege of helping lead some of these efforts, but their achievements belong to the many governments, institutions, advocates, clinicians, partners and local teams who make implementation possible.
Leadership is not only about what we accomplish ourselves. It is about what we enable others to achieve.
As UICC enters its next chapter, my commitment is to listen, strengthen partnerships, build capacity, and help translate our shared ambitions into measurable progress.
Together, we can accomplish more.”
