“When to start breast checks? And what tests to do?
‘Professor, when should I start breast checks? And what tests should I do?’
It’s one of the questions I get asked most often.
It is also one of the questions that Giorgiana Pojar asked me in the fifth episode of ‘Voci in Viaggio’, the podcast of the Agostino Gemelli University Hospital Foundation, together with Carolina Marconi.
The answer is simple: there is no equal path for all women.
Age, family history and individual risk factors are key elements in determining when to start check-ups and which tests to perform.
This is why it is important to rely on a specialist, who can indicate the most appropriate prevention program for each woman.
It is equally important not to underestimate any changes in the breasts. The appearance of a lump, changes in the skin or nipple, abnormal discharge or changes in the shape of the breast do not necessarily mean a tumor, but they always deserve a specialist evaluation.
In this video I explain why effective prevention does not mean doing more tests, but doing the right tests, at the right time, for the right woman.
Because prevention is really effective when it is personalized.
In the coming days I will share a new excerpt of the interview, addressing another of the questions I am most frequently asked about the prevention and treatment of breast cancer.”
