George Vlachogiannis: Colombian Expert Consensus on Stage III NSCLC Resectability in Resource-Limited Settings

George Vlachogiannis, Managing Editor of Cancer Control at Sage, shared a post on LinkedIn:

Cancer Control reports an Expert Consensus Statement on resectability in stage III non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) within resource-limited settings. The consensus was developed by a multidisciplinary panel of Colombian experts following the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) standardized operating procedures.

The panel highlights that selected patients, particularly those with non-bulky, single-station N2 disease, may be candidates for surgery as part of multimodality treatment, while emphasizing individualized decision-making, invasive restaging when appropriate, and multidisciplinary evaluation.

This work is highly relevant for low- and middle-income countries, where access to advanced staging, specialized surgery, and coordinated cancer care may be limited.

By adapting evidence to real-world constraints, the consensus supports more consistent surgical decision-making and aims to improve outcomes and quality of life for patients with locally advanced NSCLC, especially in resource-limited settings.”
