Gashaw Arega: Proud to Celebrate Our Graduating Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Fellows

Gashaw Arega, Pediatric Hematologist and Oncologist at Addis Ababa University, shared a post on LinkedIn:

I am proud to join colleagues in congratulating our graduating Pediatric Hematology and Oncology (PHO) subspecialists, including our first female Pediatric Hematologists and Oncologists – a truly historic milestone for Ethiopia.

This achievement reflects years of dedication, mentorship, and teamwork.

Abdi Mulatu, Hiyaw Abebe Bekele, Shimels Tessema  Alemayehu Girma. As a mentor who had the privilege of teaching and guiding them during their two-years + subspecialty training, it is deeply rewarding to witness their growth into independent specialists.

It is a proud moment to recognize Dr. Tigist Chalachew and Dr. Hiyaw Abebe as Ethiopia’s first female Pediatric Hematology and Oncology specialists (Both same bath graduates).

This is a historic milestone
Addis Ababa University continues to demonstrate remarkable progress in building national capacity. Over the past six years, a total of ten Pediatric Hematologist-Oncologists have been trained and graduated, significantly strengthening pediatric oncology services across the country.

In parallel, pediatric hematology-oncology services in Ethiopia are now decentralizing from Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital to around eight centers nationwide, improving access to care closer to patients’ homes. This important transformation has been supported by national efforts and key partnerships, including the ASLAN project, which has contributed significantly to capacity building, training, and service expansion.

This is more than a graduation-it is the expansion of hope for children with cancer in Ethiopia, and a meaningful step forward in building equitable, nationwide pediatric cancer care.”
