Frances Drummond: Addressing Sunbed-Related Cancer Risks in Ireland

Frances Drummond, Head of Research at Breakthrough Cancer Research, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Skin cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in Ireland (National Cancer Registry Ireland). It has been shown that use of sunbeds under the age of 35 almost doubles our risk of skin cancer and the World Health Organization has classified UV-emitting tanning devices as carcinogenic. Ocular cancer risk is also increased.

The Minister Jennifer Murnane O Connor opened the Health Service Executive’s ‘National Workshop on Sunbeds’ this morning with a commitment from the government to address the cancer risk due to sunbeds. A very informed room of stakeholders, and we look forward to the report emanating from it and to the next steps: reduce or limit use, inform the public of risks, regulate usage further, and/ban their use in order to reduce cancer risk.

Health Research Board (HRB) systematic review is welcome.”
