Filipe Coutinho: Bringing Global Perspectives to Geriatric Oncology at SIOG 2026

Filipe Coutinho, Medical Oncologist at Unidade Local de Saúde Médio Ave, shared on LinkedIn:

“Looking forward to SIOG 2026 in Valencia!

From 5 to 7 November, I’ll be joining colleagues from around the world at the SIOG – International Society of Geriatric Oncology 2026 Annual Conference, contributing to several scientific, educational, and leadership activities.

SIOG has played an important role in my professional journey. What started as an opportunity to learn and connect with experts has grown into a commitment to advancing geriatric oncology, both in Portugal and internationally.

As SIOG National Representative for Portugal, a member of the 2024-2026 YoungSIOG Governance Team, and coordinator of Geriatric Oncology Working Group of the Sociedade Portuguesa de Oncologia SPO (GTOG/SPO), I’m grateful for the opportunities to contribute to this shared effort.

This year, I’ll be involved in:

  • Thursday, 5 November
  • Geriatric Assessment Workshop (15:15–17:15) – Chair and speaker on cognition dimension.

Friday, 6 November

  • Treviso Alumni Meet & Greet (07:00–08:00) – Invited to share my journey since the SIOG Advanced Course and its relevant impact on my work in Portugal and SIOG.
  • Poster P158 – Presenting our clinical case on oncologist-led geriatric assessment to prevent premature therapeutic exclusion in metastatic colorectal cancer.
  • Young SIOG General Assembly (13:00–14:00) – Participating as Governance Team member.
  • The Global State of Geriatric Oncology (15:00–16:00) – Chairing a session bringing together perspectives from SIOG National Representatives.
  • SIOG General Assembly (18:00–19:00) – Joining fellow members to discuss the Society’s future.

Saturday, 7 November

  • Young SIOG Poster Walk (10:30–11:00) – Participating as a jury member.

Beyond these responsibilities, I look forward to the scientific sessions, new ideas, and conversations with colleagues.

Through our work with the GTOG/SPO in Portugal, I’ve learned that advancing geriatric oncology requires more than evidence. It takes collaboration, education, persistence, and people willing to turn ideas into practice.

There is still much to do, but also much we can achieve together.

If you’re attending SIOG2026, I hope we’ll have the chance to meet, exchange experiences, and explore new opportunities for collaboration.

See you in Valencia!”
