Filipe Coutinho: Milestone Workshop on Geriatric Oncology at National Congress of Oncology

Filipe Coutinho, Medical Oncologist at the Local Health Unit of the Middle Ave and Young SIOG Governance 2024-2026, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“A moment that marks an important milestone for the Geriatric Oncology Working Group of the Portuguese Society of Oncology.

Yesterday, at National Congress of Oncology, together with GERMI – Geriatrics, Portuguese Society of Internal Medicine (led by Sofia Duque), we delivered the first workshop ‘Geriatric Oncology in Practice’.

Across five dynamic stations, each with two trainers, participants learned how to easily apply geriatric screening tools, interpret the findings, and identify practical interventions that can meaningfully improve both oncologic and non-oncologic outcomes in older adults with cancer.
This is what drives us: empowering teams, translating evidence into real-world care, and improving lives with science and humanity.

I am deeply grateful to the Portuguese Society of Oncology for the opportunity, to the logistics team for making everything run seamlessly, and to our truly multidisciplinary group of trainers who brought this workshop to life: Joana Marinho, Pedro Marques, Ana Pessoa, Susana Ganhão-Arranhado, Rafaela Veríssimo, Fernando Osório, Paulo Almeida, Filipe Coutinho, Natália Loureiro and Ana de Carmo Campos.

Since 2020, I have learned, while leading the GTOG, that real progress emerges from the meeting point between science and people who truly believe in what they do. Yesterday’s workshop was yet another proof of that.

We continue to move forward. Older adults with cancer deserve nothing less than continuous improvement.”
