“A wonderful visit to the University of Wisconsin this past week, where I had the privilege of giving Grand Rounds to a joint audience from the Department of Surgery and the Carbone Cancer Center.
My talk focused on a topic that is central to my American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) presidential theme, Intentional Teams. Exceptional Care. We know that exceptional care is never the work of one person-or even one discipline.
It requires teams that are intentionally built around shared purpose, trust, psychological safety, clear roles, and leadership that can adapt to the needs of the moment.
One of the highlights of the visit was having the opportunity to see those teams in action. I enjoyed meeting with faculty-old friends and new-and hearing about the role ASCO has played in their careers and professional communities.
I was especially grateful for time with patient navigators, APPs, and others whose expertise and commitment are essential to how patients experience their cancer care.
