Elisabetta Bonzano: Multidisciplinary Management of Meningiomas Based on Novel Molecular Classification

Elisabetta Bonzano, Medical Director and Radiation Oncologist at IRCCS San Matteo Polyclinic Foundation, shared a post on X:

Multidisciplinary management of meningiomas in the era of precision oncology.

Novel molecular classification systems for meningioma on the basis of DNA methylation, copy-number alterations and specific driver mutations are being developed to improve guiding of personalized management decisions.

The introduction of advanced imaging modalities for meningioma, particularly somatostatin receptor-targeted PET combined with MRI, is supporting precision surgical and radiotherapy approaches.

Surgical resection remains the primary treatment approach for symptomatic or progressive meningioma. Emerging intraoperative molecular and imaging tools have the potential to further refine surgical decision-making.

Radiotherapy, including stereotactic radiosurgery and intensity-modulated radiotherapy, provides appropriate local control across all meningioma grades.

Systemic therapies, including targeted agents, immune checkpoint inhibitors and radioligand therapy, are emergent options for patients with recurrent or aggressive meningioma.”
