European Cancer Organisation shared on LinkedIn:
“Europe Losing Its Share of Cancer Trials.
In 2008, Europe’s share of global oncology trials stood at 41%. By 2023, it had fallen to 21%.
A new report from the European Cancer Organisation (ECO) sounds the alarm. But this is not a story of decline.
It’s a story of opportunity.
‘Europe has the science to lead the world in cancer care. What it has lacked is the strategy to match it. Put cancer innovation at the heart of Europe’s competitiveness agenda and turn scientific excellence into better outcomes for cancer patients in every member state.’ – Isabel Rubio, President, European Cancer Organisation
To seize the lead, ECO sets out a clear roadmap:
- Put oncology innovation at the centre of Europe’s competitiveness strategy
- Build on Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan and the EU Cancer Mission
- Resolve regulatory barriers (GDPR interpretation, IVDR, the Clinical Trials Regulation)
- Reduce fragmentation so new treatments reach patients sooner
ECO urges the European Commission and EU member states to weigh these recommendations as they shape Europe’s new competitiveness agenda.

To which Joel Plaja, Director of Oncology Policy and Government Affairs (EUCAN) at AstraZeneca, added:
“Thanks to Elisabetta Zanon, Richard Price and the entire European Cancer Organisation team for this extremely timely paper, which was a pleasure to contribute towards.
Europe has an opportunity to put cancer policy at the heart of its competitiveness agenda.
To do so is not only the right thing for its citizens but also the smart choice economically.
There are a wide-range of recommendations here that, if implemented, puts Europe firmly on the right track.”
