E. Anders Kolb, President and Chief Executive Officer of Blood Cancer United, shared on LinkedIn:
“Yesterday, a federal court struck down part of a harmful federal regulation that created new bureaucratic hurdles for cancer patients seeking to enroll in or maintain Medicaid coverage. The regulation had narrowed Medicaid protections intended to exempt those patients and others with serious medical conditions from Medicaid work reporting requirements enacted as part of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act of 2025.
We know how unpredictable cancer can be. Treatment often takes a significant toll that makes it very challenging for people to work. Experts projected that this provision alone would lead to 1.8 million patients losing health coverage over the next several years.
That’s why Blood Cancer United vigorously opposed this rule when it was announced in June and joined other patient groups in submitting an amicus brief in this case, Massachusetts et al. v. Oz et al., arguing for this language to be struck.
While the ruling will not resolve all the challenges facing patients subject to Medicaid work requirements, and further legal action is likely, we are encouraged that the court has taken action to protect access for people with cancer and other serious medical conditions.
