Drew Moghanaki, Professor, Chief of Thoracic Oncology at the Department of Radiation Oncology and Stanley Iezman and Nancy Stark Endowed Chair in Thoracic Radiation Oncology Research at David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, and Chief Medical Officer of Respirati, shared a post on X:

“Kudos to ASTRO for pushing back on mainstream media misinformation about radiation therapy. This is the exact type of leadership we need at this time in history.”

ASTRO Acts in Response to Inaccurate News Coverage

“Many of you may be aware of the media piece on IORT that aired on NBC this week. We have heard from many members about their disgust with such a story. ASTRO shares your concerns and has acted clearly and directly to take the following steps:

  1. The breast resource panel reviewed the NBC piece and provided a comprehensive statement, which we are sending to the media and partner groups.
  2. ASTRO CEO, Vivek S. Kavadi, MD, MBA, FASTRO, sent a letter to NBC News executives to express his and our concern about the inaccurate, inappropriate, and irresponsible nature of this story.
  3. We launched a paid social media effort that will bring accurate information to people seeking information about IORT, breast cancer treatment, and the safety of RT treatments.
  4. We reached out to engage a range of patient groups to ensure that their members and patient communities have the most accurate information about the recommended course of treatment for patients with a specific type of breast cancer.
  5. ASTRO is developing an FAQ document to answer patient questions that may result from the news segment and will make this resource available to members for your patient consultations.

We will keep you, our valued members, informed about any other efforts. If you have any questions or comments, please email [email protected].”
