Deependra Singh: First Results of the DECAN Study in Nepal

Deependra Singh, Technical Lead at IARC – International Agency for Research on Cancer / World Health Organization, shared a post on LinkedIn about a DECAN study he and his colleagues co-authored, adding:

“First results of the DECAN study in Nepal (home-country) are published today in the BMJ Global Health.

Unacceptable delays in accessing diagnostic and treatment services emphasize the clear need of interventions targeted to improving awareness and access to primary care, expanding facilities for cancer diagnosis, strengthening referral and treatment facilities to significantly improve cancer outcomes in Nepal. Our study findings can be utilized for better planning of cancer control efforts in the country and in similar settings in LMICs

DECAN is a multicancer cohort study, the largest cohort of adult and childhood cancer patients prospectively followed at the largest oncology hospital (BPKMCH) in Nepal.”

Partha Basu, Head of Early Detection, Prevention and Infections Branch at IARC/WHO, also shared a post about DECAN study on LinkedIn, adding:

“Happy to share our latest publication in the BMJ Global Health.

The DECAN study of International Agency for Research on Cancer / World Health Organization measured the delays occurring along the pathway of care of nearly 1200 cancer patients in Nepal and identified the determinants of delays.

Such Patterns of Care studies are extremely valuable especially to improve cancer care in the LMICs.

Great work by Dr. Deependra Singh, Dr Asmita Rana and colleagues at B.P. Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital, Nepal!”
