Debra Montague Highlights the Need for Equitable Early Detection of Lung Cancer Across Europe

Lung Cancer Europe shared on LinkedIn:

“Lung Cancer Awareness Month starts tomorrow, and our President, Debra Montague, has shared her thoughts on the conversations Europe needs to start:

‘Every hour, more than 25 people in the EU die from lung cancer. It’s the biggest cancer killer in Europe, and still we lower our voices when we say its name.’

Debra’s article looks at where that silence costs us most.

It’s there when someone decides whether a cough is worth bothering anyone with. It’s there in the consultation room, where healthcare professionals have to spot lung cancer in symptoms that could mean many things.

And it’s there in the policy conversation on screening, where progress across Europe is still uneven.

‘People still think lung cancer has a type. It doesn’t. Anyone with lungs can get it.’

On screening, her message to governments is clear:

‘Where you live in Europe shouldn’t decide whether your lung cancer is found early.’

This November, Lung Cancer Europe is starting those conversations.

Get Checked! 2026 launches tomorrow, looking at both sides of the consultation.

Later this month, The Big Lung Cancer Conversation arrives outside the European Parliament in Brussels.
