Daniel Peters: Returning to Levine Cancer Institute as a Physician

Daniel Peters, Assistant Professor of Cancer Medicine – Leukemia, Blood and Marrow Transplant Specialist at Atrium Health, shared on LinkedIn:

”It’s funny how life works.

As a first-year medical student, I took a summer research position at Atrium Health Levine Cancer Institute. I had no idea that a small “chart review” project on acute myeloid leukemia (AML) would spark a lifelong interest in leukemia. Nor did I imagine that returning a decade later would be the perfect alignment of career and family.

So often in medicine, we feel torn between choosing what is best for our professional growth and what is best for our personal lives. I feel incredibly fortunate to have found both.

I am excited to share that I am starting a new role with the Leukemia and Bone Marrow Transplant group at Levine. I have the great privilege to care for the patient population I love while continuing to advance early-phase clinical trials in leukemia.

I am grateful for my time at the Georgia Cancer Center, and especially to my colleagues there who taught me so much in a short time.

I am grateful to countless others, including my mentors, friends, and especially my wife and family for guiding me toward the most personally and professionally fulfilling role I could imagine.

Lastly, I am deeply grateful for the life and legacy of Robert Ingel. As the father of my childhood best friend, I knew him long before medicine became my career. His personal journey with blood cancer brought him to the outstanding care of Levine Cancer Institute where he convinced his oncologists to take a chance on a young and ambitious medical student. That opportunity changed the course of my life.

It’s an honor to return to the place where this journey began. Great to be home in Charlotte!”
