”We are very early in what I think will be a paradigm shift in cancer care.
We are learning with greater precision how to identify people at risk before they develop cancer.
This emerging field is sometimes referred to as ‘cancer interception.’
It’s mostly being driven by advances in AI, risk modeling, genetics, biomarkers and multi-cancer early detection. And we are starting to get a much clearer picture of who may be at risk and how we might be able to intervene earlier.
Still lots of unanswered questions. Perhaps the biggest one is: who owns this part of care? How do we determine who actually benefits from these tests? How do we avoid creating + anxiety and unnecessary workups? And how can we eventually scale some of this to the average person, not just those at very high risk?
Excited because there is so much happening and so much to learn.
I hope to share some of where I think the field is heading and interview some of the people helping to lead it on my Substack.”
