“From community action in Jos to the global childhood cancer conversation.
This past week, the childhood cancer community gathered in San Antonio, Texas, for the 58th Congress of the International Society of Paediatric Oncology (SIOP 2026).
We are pleased that work from our childhood cancer advocacy experience in Jos, Nigeria, was accepted and presented as an e-poster:
‘Youth-Led Community Advocacy to Improve Childhood Cancer Awareness and Early Detection in Jos, Nigeria.’
Across 2023–2025, the work brought together youth volunteers, schools, communities, digital advocacy and stakeholder engagement around childhood cancer awareness and early recognition.
But perhaps one of its most important lessons is captured in the poster itself:
Advocacy is part of the solution, not the whole solution.
- Awareness must connect to recognition.
- Recognition must connect to timely referral.
- And referral must connect to functioning childhood cancer care systems.
That lesson continues to shape how we think about the work ahead at CPCI.
Participating virtually in SIOP 2026 this past week also provided another opportunity to learn from the wider childhood cancer community and engage with research and ideas from different settings.
As Go Gold With CPCI continues, we remain committed to bringing local experience and global learning together – asking not only how we can raise awareness, but how we can contribute to stronger pathways for children and families.
Because ultimately, what we learn must find its way back to the child.
