”Patient navigation saves lives. When it works, patients move through screening, diagnosis, referral, treatment, and survivorship without falling through the gaps that cost them time, health, and sometimes everything.
C/Can and Embrace Society Ghana convened the Embedding Patient Navigation in Kumasi’s Cancer Care System Workshop, bringing together healthcare leaders, clinicians, patient navigators, cancer survivors, policymakers, and researchers to build exactly that kind of system in Kumasi, Ghana.
Multidisciplinary teams from Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Peace and Love Hospital, HopeXchange Medical Centre, KNUST Hospital, and Kumasi South Hospital worked together to map patient journeys, identify gaps in referral pathways, and develop institution-specific plans to strengthen patient navigation. Lived experiences shared by survivors, navigators, and caregivers shaped the conversation throughout.
The Lancet Oncology Commission’s recent findings on the workforce crisis in low- and middle-income countries make clear how urgent this work is and how essential it is that patient-centred approaches support both patients and the health workers who care for them.
What came through clearly in Kumasi was the strength of commitment from participating institutions to move from assessment to action. A coordinated, multi-institutional patient navigation system won’t just improve outcomes. It will help ensure patients start and stay in care. We are encouraged by the strong commitment demonstrated by participating institutions and stakeholders.
This is what systemic change looks like at the city level: local leadership, collaborative problem-solving, and a shared determination to build health systems where every patient receives the right care, at the right time, in the right place.”
