Christos Tsagkaris: ELLOK 10th Anniversary at World Cancer Day 2026

Christos Tsagkaris, Orthopedic Surgery Resident at Solothurner Hospitals AG – soH, shared a post on LinkedIn:

If we imagine the fight against cancer as a campaign, then literacy is as important as reconnaissance. Patients, clinicians, researchers, and regulators need a shared reading of the terrain — and an understanding of each other’s capacities and limits — to move in the same direction.

The 2026 Conference of the Hellenic Cancer Federation (ELLOK) offered exactly this: a chance to see where cancer prevention and control currently stand, and to meet the people shaping this work in Greece and beyond. Within this frame, I was glad to comment on cancer and digital literacy needs expressed live by the public, in a thoughtful and open discussion with  Andreas Charalambous, Nikolina Dodlek, Marius Geanta, Antonis Billis, as part of the broader ECHoS | Establishing of Cancer Mission Hubs: Networks and Synergies section on the World Cancer Day

The celebration of ELLOK’s 10th anniversary was particularly moving. From a patient organisation grounded in lived experience, ELLOK has grown into a national cancer mission hub, connecting its founding vision with cancer prevention and control efforts in Europe — and back again. This continuity is a testament to the dedication of its board and team.

This year’s World Cancer Day was further marked by the announcement of the 5th edition of the European Code Against Cancer, jointly led by the European Commission and the IARC – International Agency for Research on Cancer / World Health Organization. Compared to ECAC4, ECAC5 brings forward actionable recommendations on emerging challenges — from lung cancer screening and Хэштег#vaping to physical activity and exercise. Having first engaged with cancer prevention in 2018 through the ECAC4 ambassadors’ group, seeing this evolution felt like a broader — though not yet complete — circle.

Circling back on journeys, it has been a privilege to reconnect with teachers and mentors who shaped my medical path, including Christos Lionis, Achilleas Gravanis, Maria Tolia, and Kyriakos Souliotis, as well as with  Nikolaos Karvounis, whose dedication continues to resonate in my home city’s cancer hospital.

Many thanks to George Kapetanakis and the Hellenic Cancer Federation | ELLOK team for creating the space to listen, reflect, and genuinely engage — with measure, openness, and respect.”
