Catherine Mwaba: Championing Equity in Cancer Care Through Radiotherapy
Catherine Mwaba, Radiation Oncologist Technical Officer at International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), shared on LinkedIn:
“I have been a dedicated cancer advocate and specialist since completing my fellowship at Witwatersrand University in 2007. Transitioning to a role of specialist at the Cancer Diseases Hospital , I embraced the challenge of working with limited resources, primarily utilizing 2D EBRT techniques. Despite the initial hurdles, our team aspired to implement more advanced treatment methods and initiated local training programs in Radiation Therapy and Clinical Oncology.
Over the years, I engaged in multiple IAEA-supported projects, gaining valuable experience and insights into regional initiatives. Serving on the AFRA management committee and the Partnership Building and Resource Mobilization Subcommittee until 2023 broadened my understanding of nuclear science applications.
During my tenure at the Cancer Diseases Hospital, I had the privilege of meeting esteemed figures such as the former President of the USA, George W. Bush, and the late DG IAEA, Yukiya Amano, among others.
My journey has been defined by a passion for making a difference beyond the confines of the clinic. Working on projects aimed at enhancing radiotherapy services and developing impactful initiatives has been immensely fulfilling. As I continue my professional development in the Applied Radiation Biology and Radiotherapy Section, I am reminded that the core of our efforts lies in prioritizing the well-being of patients.
The opportunity to contribute to improving access to radiotherapy on a broader scale is both a privilege and a responsibility that drives my commitment to serving others. Looking ahead, my focus remains on continuous learning, growth, and dedicated service to communities in need.”
