Carolyn Taylor: September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month

Carolyn Taylor, Founder and Executive Director at Global Focus on Cancer, shared on LinkedIn:

“September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.

This is deeply personal for me.

Twenty years ago, I was diagnosed with ovarian and endometrial cancers. I was extraordinarily fortunate they were found at an early stage. Ovarian cancer is most often diagnosed at an advanced stage, when it is much more difficult to treat.

It is the deadliest gynecologic cancer, yet far too little attention is given to it. There is no reliable routine screening test, and the signs and symptoms can be subtle and easily attributed to other things.

Persistent bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain, feeling full quickly or difficulty eating, and changes in urinary habits are among the symptoms worth knowing.

Most of these symptoms will not mean ovarian cancer. But knowing what is normal for your body matters. If something is new, persistent, or simply doesn’t feel right, please don’t ignore it.

I was incredibly lucky. Many women are not.

This September, please take a moment to learn the signs and symptoms, talk about ovarian cancer, and share this information with the women in your life. It deserves far more attention than it receives.”
